HBO's dedicated streaming service HBO Max launched with a heap of content earlier this year, and like every streaming service, the executives have rushed to put more original series in the pipeline. Lovecraft Country, an adaptation of the novel of the same name, has been in development with some of Hollywood's top talent, and now the horror television series finally has a release date.

Lovecraft Country follows the story of an African-American man who travels across America in the 1950s in search of his missing father. The series is said to explore racial tensions during the Jim Crow era of the US and will feature "monstrous creatures that could be ripped from an H.P. Lovecraft paperback." The series stars Jonathon Majors (When We Rise), Jurnee Smollett-Bell (Friday Night Lights), and Courtney B. Vance (The People v. O.J. Simpson).

In a new poster for Lovecraft Country with the tagline "be careful what you search for," HBO has revealed the series will premiere on August 16 on HBO and will be available for streaming on HBO Max. Episodes will air weekly with ten in the first season.

Lovecraft Country comes from executive producers Jordan Peele, Misha Green, and J.J. Abrams who are all veterans of sci-fi and horror. Jordan Peele was behind the hit drama Get Out, and Lovecraft Country seems to be following in the same footsteps by exploring racial tensions through horror. A trailer was released for the show earlier in June showcasing the show's creepy vibe.

H.P. Lovecraft-inspired stories have been the basis for many hit projects even spurning their own genre of "Lovecraftian horror." Roleplaying games such as World of Warcraft and Call of Cthulu notably draw from Lovecraft mythos, as well as horror games such as the Amnesia series. Lovecraft fans should be excited to see what new horrors Lovecraft Country has in store when it debuts in August.

Lovecraft Country will premiere on August 16 on HBO and HBO Max.
